Clutha Gold Trail

What you can expect

One of three Great Rides located in Central Otago, the Clutha Gold Trail is a two-day, 73-kilometre ride from Lake Roxburgh Dam to Lawrence which offers a number of unique heritage stops along with beautiful scenery throughout your journey. Officially opened in October 2013, the Clutha Gold Trail combines natural splendour with the area’s rich history (literally!), including Chinese gold miners, Maori Moa-hunters, European pastoral farming, mining, and the expansive railways. Following the powerful Clutha Mata-au River on its way through Beaumont Gorge, the trail twists and weaves between trees along the riverside before branching off into farming valleys and sections of the historic Roxburgh Branch railway line, including a 440-metre-long tunnel known as “Big Hill Tunnel”.
